When to remove a tree
Not every problem tree needs to come down, but removal usually makes sense when a tree is dead or mostly dead, has a serious lean toward a structure, has a split or hollow trunk, has roots damaging a foundation or sewer line, or is simply too close to the house to live with as it grows.
How a removal usually goes
In an open yard, a crew may be able to fell the tree in one piece. Near houses, fences and lines, most trees in Chattanooga come down in sections: a climber or bucket truck removes limbs and then the trunk piece by piece, lowering each section with ropes. Large trees in tight spots sometimes need a crane, which raises the price but can make a dangerous job much safer.
A typical job includes cutting the tree, chipping the branches and hauling away the debris. Stump grinding and keeping the logs as firewood are often optional, so ask what's included when you get your quote.
What affects the price
Height and trunk diameter matter most, followed by how close the tree is to buildings or power lines, whether equipment can reach it, and whether the wood is dead and brittle. Our tree removal cost guide covers this in more detail.
Power lines: if a tree is touching or tangled in a utility line between the pole and your house, don't touch it. Call EPB or your power company first. Many utilities handle trees on the main lines themselves.
Questions
How long does tree removal take?
A small to medium tree in an open yard can take an hour or two. A large tree near a house that has to come down in sections can take most of a day.
Will they clean up afterwards?
Most quotes include chipping branches and hauling debris. Ask whether that's included, and whether stump grinding is extra.
Can a tree be removed in winter?
Yes. Many crews like winter work because leaves are off and the ground is firmer, and scheduling can be easier than in spring.
